Most of the couples I see ask for help with communicating better. And effective communication is so much harder than it seems! We’re just not taught it growing up. Unfortunately, most of our parents weren’t either. Couples counseling is an ideal place to learn how to do this. But it can be scary. It’s an admission your relationship needs help. And let’s face it everyone’s relationships needs help. (Even mine! And that’s why we went to couples counseling.)
It’s scary because in part your partner needs to change and you’re not sure they will. But you also need to change and you’re not sure you know how to. My approach to couples counseling is to teach you what to say and how to say it during both times of conflict and peace. It’s also to better understand what gets in your way from implementing these changes outside of therapy. Most of the time, it’s because it’s hard to be vulnerable when you’re not sure your partner will be vulnerable with you.
Taking that first step in coming to counseling can be hard. My encouragement is to call me and come in. Let’s see how it feels for you to be in the room and talk about what’s going on. Then you can decide if therapy is right for you.
